Is there such a thing as having too much of a good thing? The answer is yes. If you’ve ever gotten sick from eating a sack full of Halloween chocolate, then you know that this is a reality.

So I went to the angel and told him to give me the small scroll. “Yes, take it and eat it,” he said. “It will be sweet as honey in your mouth, but it will turn sour in your stomach!” So I took the small scroll from the hand of the angel, and I ate it! It was sweet in my mouth, but when I swallowed it, it turned sour in my stomach. And I was told, “You must again prophesy about many peoples and nations and languages and kings.” (Revelation 10:9-11 ESV)

First question you should be asking: why in the world would the angel tell John to eat a scroll? Yes, why would the angel tell John to eat parchment and ink? Secondly, why would John eat a piece of parchment just because an angel told him to do so? Some of you may argue that John was being obedient. But the angel definitely says that it won’t end well for John when he eats it. Needless to say, John could have used some Tums after swallowing what seemed to be deliciousness.

Have you ever had an opportunity given to you that seemed so sweet when you got it and experienced it, but really turned out to be an ulcer causing malady? Let’s say a project at work that elevated your status and recognition at the company but it’s related stress sucked the soul from your very last breath. Or maybe the dream girl or dream boy that is really a drama queen or king ladled with unpredictable selfish tendencies. Whatever the situation may be, it’s surely not a blessing in disguise.

What it is, is a prophetic sign for you to put one foot in front of the other and faithfully carry on with your duties and obligations because the sour stomach didn’t kill you and it is definitely not going to stop you from living the life you were created to live. For John, he was told he would have to continue to prophesy again. What is your sour stomach experience telling you?
