Have you ever regretted not taking advantage or shied away from stepping into an opportunity open to you? Sure, there may have been legitimate reasons for not taking advantage of a situation or shying away, but in hindsight, I can tell you that some of my biggest regrets in life have been opportunities I did not seize. On the flip side of that thought, I know for sure that the opportunities I did grab a hold of, have result in some of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Like asking my now wife to date me six years ago and throw caution to the wind.
Be wise in the way you act towards those who are not believers, making good use of every opportunity you have. (Colossians 4:5 GNB)
The Apostle Paul, writing to the cosmopolitan believers comprising the church of Colossae, a church located in what I believe to be one of the first commuter cities located in between two great cities of the first century AD, tells the church that they have latent potential, even though they are located in the outer-ring suburbs, to influence and be something greater, if they would just take advantage of the opportunities presented in front of them.
This message resounds more boldly now in the 21st century than it did in the 1st century. Many of us are in commuter towns, suburbs, jobs away from poles of influence and power; but we have the chance to do something amazing if we seize the opportunity God gives us through our relationships with non-believers.
If we knew then what we know now, the opportunities we seize would be drastically different, wouldn’t they? We would have done some seriously incredibly things if we knew God was behind them. Unfortunately, we cannot do anything about lost opportunities; but we definitely can do something about present and future ones. Won’t you join me today in a movement to seize the opportunities God gives us on a daily basis to impact the world around us? Pray about those opportunities and I guarantee there will be an opening for you to seize.
