Are you getting enough rest? I don’t mean days where you can freely run errands and chores that you’ve been putting off for weeks, months, or years. I am talking about rest, where you sit back, relax, and reflect on everything you’ve experienced in the past weeks, months, or years you’ve neglected to rest. If the answer is “no”, then I want you to read this verse about what happens we we do rest.

Moreover, I gave them my Sabbaths, as a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the Lord who sanctifies them. (Ezekiel 20:12 ESV)

God tells the Prophet Ezekiel that the “Sabbath” was given as a sign to His people to know that they are being sanctified. To understand how loaded this one statement is, allow me to breakdown the concepts for you a way that is applicable and practical.

“Sabbath” is a religious day of rest and observance, where one would spend a day to refrain from the work they have been engaged in to look at what was done, what happened, and what was experienced. To ensure we are all working on the same definition of “rest” which is key and critical for “Sabbath” is this: freedom from activity or labor; a state of motionlessness or inactivity; peace of mind and spirit.

Having said all of this, let me reinterpret the passage we were looking: The Sabbath was created so that people can stop anxiously doing things that would take away from a peace of mind and spirit to reflect on everything that has been experienced since the last time they stopped to reflect on those things. This is important because it is only possible to recognize the true extent of God’s touch in our lives.

We are sanctified through rest. Take a break and reflect on the grace of God in your life today.
