Understand this principle: serving is the best and easiest way to become great. That applies for your careers and in your personal lives.

For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves. (Luke 22:27 ESV)

If your motive is to be the best and the greatest, which should always be your motive, because we are children of the greatest God, then you need to open your eyes to opportunities to serve others and then execute. Two reasons for you to serve from what Jesus taught us and three benefits that flow from it.

Reasons to serve:

  • Jesus came to serve. The son of God humbled himself to serve us. He was the greatest to have ever walked this Earth. That is an example to follow.
  • Serving keeps us humble. Knowing that the work of serving isn’t yours but doing so, keeps our mindset focused on others.

Benefits of Serving:

  • Having humility helps us in coping with anxiety. There is nothing to be anxious of because you would have done all that you could to serve your best.
  • Serving provides a perspective on how life should be. When you are giving yourself without expecting anything back, you can prioritize effectively without being bogged by competing priorities.
  • People will recognize your greatness. You gave to others even though you could have demanded and deserved more. The ability to serve, despite what is owed to you is the greatest legacy.

The Son of God came to serve. If we follow his example and go beyond ourselves to serve those around us, then the benefits of serving would be ours, as the benefits of faith in Jesus is ours.

Challenge: Try serving one person a day this week and see what happens in your relationship with him/her.
