Biblical Reference: Ruth 3:10–13

As a leader, you’re constantly battling turnover, quiet quitting, and talent drain and the standard response is to throw HR compliance or transactional perks at the problem: performance bonuses, revised handbook policies, spending stipends, or performance improvement plans.

In Ruth 3, Boaz confronts a legal system known as the levirate law. Legally, he could have punted the responsibility to somebody else because there was another redeemer closer in line. He had zero legal obligation to marry a penniless foreign widow and take on her family’s debts.

But instead, Boaz operates out of hesed. Which is relentless, covenant loyalty and love that comes with unmerited grace. Boaz looks at Ruth in verse 11 and tells her, “Do not fear. I will do for you all that you ask.” He takes on personal, financial, and reputational risk to protect someone under his watch because her dignity matters to him.

Employees don’t pledge loyalty to an employment contract; they pledge loyalty to leaders who exhibit the character of hesed. When your team knows you only care about them to the exact edge of their employment agreement, they will give you the bare-minimum work required to avoid getting fired. But when a manager leads with hesed, culture transforms.

If you want to circumvent burnout, quiet quitting, and a talent drain in your business, then stand in the gap during their personal crises, protect them from organizational politics, and fight for their professional growth — that’s showing the hesed you received through your faith in Jesus.

Identify a high-capacity team member who is currently carrying heavy stress, personal strain, or career stagnation. Step out from behind the HR policy handbook. Set a one-on-one meeting this week and ask: “What is weighing on you right now, and how can I leverage my executive authority to give you covering?” The commit resources or time to back up your words.
