In the dog days of summer, when you’re at your wits end, burning out into crispy little pieces on the edges, you realize your life style is unsustainable. The lies you told during the day, the fakeness you held up like a house of cards tenuously, the heavier and bigger things in your life you picked up to juggle, become energy draining and your source of power (yourself) empties out. You then ask yourself how you can continue forward. The next morning you wake up, grit your teeth and tell yourself: “one foot forward,” and you continue to trudge along, like a robot on energy saver– a mindless drone. This cycle becomes your life.

One thing God has spoken, two things I have heard: “Power belongs to you, God, and with you, Lord, is unfailing love”; – Psalm 62:11-12a
We are reluctant to ask for help. We are proud Americans. We think we can manage. Yet, as a follower of Christ, we should know that the rules everybody else is playing by do not apply to us. We can reach deeper than ourselves; but we don’t. Another translation of this passage says this: “God said this once and for all; how many times have I heard it repeated? ‘Strength comes straight from God.'” We have a source of power available to us that we almost never tap. We think God only helps those who help themselves and that is a lie we believe and never tap the power source that can render our entire lives. If God only helped those who helped themselves, there would be nobody to help because we all sabotage ourselves. So although we hear that God can be our source of power, we never capitalize on it. Don’t we realize Jesus died on a cross and was resurrected from the dead for the sake of allowing us to tap His Father’s power, the same power giving strength to Jesus as he faced undeserved cruel and unusual punishment? This is the point of the gospel! We were once powerless because we were Fatherless, and the Good News came that we were being adopted by the Father, the King of a realm. We should be filled with humbleness and empowered by hope. We are loved despite who we are and what we’ve done. Power, real power comes straight from God. It doesn’t come from success, nor is it taken away in our failures. It stems from an unfailing love from God in Jesus Christ. I know it’s easier to render ourselves powerless because of the detours we take in life because of our failures, but failing is not a dead end; nor is it the end of love– there is no reason to lie and juggle like our source of power will be taken away. God says, lean on Him for His power, for Him to power our lives. It is time we showed some real faith and allow that power to render blessing in our lives.
