And from there they continued to Beer; that is the well of which the Lord said to Moses, Gather the people together, so that I may give them water. – Numbers 21:16 “Beer” is not referring to the alcoholic beverage made from fermented malt and hops in this passage. “Beer,” in the Hebrew, is the location of a rock formation that God caused to shoot water from. So the Israelites are continuing their journey from Egypt to Israel and God decides, in the middle of the desert, that He will give the Israelites some relief. And that He would do so by creating an oasis where water is shot up like a water fountain from a rock. Yes, this was a miracle! This was a miracle because in the desert. In the desert, you need to dig a hole in the ground to find water. Miraculously the Israelites do nothing and God has water shoot up and out from a rock formation. No work was involved except to receive and drink of the water. In 1st Corinthians, the Apostle Paul says that this rock formation in “Beer” followed the Israelites so that they would never be thirsty on their journey– it literally gave them life and was a sign of God’s grace and mercy. If your life seems to be an endless desert with no relief in sight, God wants you to come be gathered to Him so that He can give you “living water” and satisfy your thirst for life. There is relief available in your “desert” that will follow you. But you need to drink from the water fountain that God made as an oasis for your desert. As crazy as that idea may seem– to drink from what seems to be a delusion of an oasis– it may be what you need right now to find relief in that desert. Whether it’s from finances or family, or relationships or even jobs, God has a fountain for you. Just as this water fountain God provided the Israelites followed them in the desert, He wants to put one on your tail so that you too can draw on the life that springs forth from it despite everything. It doesn’t matter if you were rebelling against God or don’t even believe He’s as good as I say He is. He is the only source of water where there is none. And when you come to Him for that rock shooting water, be ready for a torrent of grace, mercy and love that you will never be able to escape because it will follow you until you get to the promise land. God’s calling you to the water fountain, go drink from it.
