Be humble in the presence of God’s mighty power, and he will honor you when the time comes. God cares for you, so turn all your worries over to him. (1 Peter 5:6-7 CEV) I’ve noticed that our acts of brazen arrogance come when we are mostly afraid of consequences or uncertain about a future predicament. Let me give you an example: a child defies his or her parents at the toy store when the child becomes more and more uncertain of the prize (parents buying toys for them). In turn this brazen act of defiance causes a scene. It usually doesn’t end well for the kid. We act like this child in the toy store except that we do it in real life, and it is a defiance to our eternal Father and not our parents (some of us may still be trying to defy our parents, but they need to grow up). We want something and we earnestly believe we deserve it. We don’t really deserve anything, but we believe we do. When it slips out of our hands because we didn’t deserve it anyhow, we become arrogant and dare God. Peter tells us that if we humble ourselves, and just love our lives how we would have lived without that selfish ambition and frivolous desire, then we can show God to take care of us. But we like our cake and we like to eat it before we bake it too. That’s unfortunate. However it may be time for us to humble ourselves (to know our true value in eyes of God–you are beloved child) and trust He will do for you what’s best. Give up your worries to Him and believe God has you in His mind. You will assuredly witness God and His power as a result of that humility.
