When we bring our empty, dry lives to Jesus, he can make them extraordinary. When we bring our extraordinary lives to Jesus and does what he says, then those extraordinary lives would be unbelievable. When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. (John 2:3) You probably know this story very well. Jesus says to his mother, “it’s not my time.” Then he turns water into wine in a miraculous event. The muscle was that Jesus turned water into wine, but the lesson we can’t miss is that when we bring our ordinary and our lack to Jesus, he can change that into amazing. Jesus’ mother, Mary, comes to Jesus during the wedding, where he is just a guest, enjoying the festivities, and she deliberately tells him that there is no more wine. This suggests that without anymore wine, the wedding party would soon end and it would end sadly. (To the college kids reading this thinking that a party only begins and ends with alcohol, that’s not the point I’m making). We can make an analogy between having no more wine at the wedding with our lives being empty and devoid of anything special or worthwhile. If you ever hit rock bottom, you’ll know that having nothing left in the tank or anything worthwhile to be excited about in your life is no fun. In fact, it’s a sign that the party is over. But that is not where the story has to end. Like Mary, you have an opportunity to go to Jesus and tell him that there is no more wine left. Rather, you should tell him, “Jesus, there is nothing worthwhile left in my life.” You can tell him this when your relationships are rocky, when your job prospects are souring, when your children are fighting you, when your family abandons you, when the people inyour church family dissent against you, etc, etc. You can tell Jesus that there is no more wine left in your life and you are need of something extraordinary. It might not be Jesus’ time to show his power to the world; however, he will make sure that if you do what he instructs you, you will have an overflow of wine in your life. There will be more to be excited and intrigued about. There will be greater tastes left in your mouth. In fact, if you know the story, the MC at the wedding tastes the wine that Jesus miraculously transformed and proclaims it to be better than the “best” wine he drank previously. When we bring our ordinary and our empty to Jesus, he will give you better than you ever tasted or imagined tasting. I want this act of extraordinary in my life, do you?
