Do you think you can mess with the dreams of the poor? You cant, for God makes their dreams come true. Psalm 14:6
If you ever thought you can’t catch a break, you aren’t alone. King David believed he couldn’t catch a break. He believed he was “poor,” and I don’t mean monetarily. He was an afflicted man. He was meek. He was always paying the price for doing what was right. That is what made him “poor.” Poverty was a disposition he chose, and it cost him dearly because people around him believed they could trample all over that. You may ask, “Why, then, should I do what is right?” That question is totally justifiable if being humble and lowly results in being taken advantage of and being tormented. I mean, just imagine being passed up for promotion at work because you decided to be fair to the people you work for/with, instead of exploiting them for a few extra dollars to line your pockets. Or imagine having to forfeit a friendship because your take on an “honest friendship” compelled you to intervene on their lives, thus leaving you alone and friendless. There are a myriad of scenarios where doing what is right doesn’t pay off (and I’m sure you can come up with a few of your own, as well). But, David explains, poverty is a choice – a willing, voluntary choice – that we make to follow our God. “God is our refuge,” he says. The truth is that in the protection of God, despite what it may look like, His people are protected. The dreams you have may suffer setbacks because you’re doing things honestly and earnestly; but, those dreams don’t die. Your dreams and aspirations survive and thrive in the grace of God’s refuge.
