I know I have a slight minor obsession with Notre Dame Football that is borderline unhealthy, and it always gets to me when I allow my love for the team take away from my passion for God. I’ll admit it, sometimes it is a distraction that keeps my heart turned away from God’s work in my life. What do you cling to in love? What is it that has your heart? What keeps you away from a relationship with your maker? More importantly, is it better than a Father that loves you beyond explanation?

And the Lord was angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned away from the Lord, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods. (1 Kings 11:9-10 ESV)

Check this out– the Bible says that Solomon clung to love, but as a result, gave his heart away from God to the idols of the people whom he loved. What does that mean? It means, the guy had 700 wives, most of whom were not followers of the God of Israel. Solomon loved these women, there is nothing wrong so far, but it was borne out of this love or clinging to be loved that Solomon did what was evil–he had allowed himself to be swayed from loving God. Thank God most of us only have to worry about loving one person. But this story paints a picture that many of us are familiar with; perhaps its not your boyfriend/girlfriend/spouse that is keeping you from loving God, it may be the job, the movies, the internet, the friends, the children, the gadgets, the hobbies, the lifestyle, etc that keep you from loving God in a way you know you can because you’re attention is spent building temples and places dedicated out of your love for whatever it is that you cling to in love. After all is said and done, does clinging to those things in love even matter? The conclusion most of you will come to is, “No, most of those things wouldn’t matter if God would show that our loving Him produces and means something.” Let’s look at our passage, it says that God, himself, appeared to Solomon TWICE! That is in addition to all the incredible things that God was doing in Solomon’s life. I am confident that God has showed up in your life. If He hasn’t, I am sure He is doing inexplicable God things in your life that you’re not paying any mind to. We need to cling to God in love. Clinging in love for anything else is a waste of your time.
