“In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. And Abel also brought an offering fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering” – Genesis 4:3-4 NIV
I think I’ve read this passage countless times since I could read and understand what I was reading. But it wasn’t until later that I really took notice of the reason why God favored Abel’s sacrifice. Abel gave God the best, the firstborn of his flock. This was a meaningful sacrifice, something that was special to him, which he gave to God. Cain only brought “some of the fruits,” there was no indication that it had any meaning or special significance to him. How many times have we given God our leftover selves, and our best to other things? God gave us His best – His Son. And more. He redeemed our past, present, and future, not just our lives and relationships. He gave us enduring promise to never leave us, healing for the pain, to strengthen us in struggles. He is our strength, our shield and very great reward. Give Him your best, your first fruits, your sincere hunger to seek Him.
“The sacrifice that God wants is a humble spirit. God, you will not turn away someone who comes with a humble heart and is willing to obey you.” – Psalm 51:17 ERV
No more leftovers.
