I’ve prayed the prayer, “God bless us” so many times I believe the meaning of God blessing us may be a diluted by the fact that we don’t see the results of God blessing us. One can argue that blessings from God are tangible and can be measured by the enjoyment and happiness in our lives, but have we ever stopped to think about what we look like when God blesses us? What really happens when God blesses us? Have you ever wondered?

God be gracious to us and bless us, And cause His face to shine upon us— Selah. – Psalm 67:1 –

In this Psalm, the writer asks God to bless a corporate “us.” The corporate “us” refers to God’s people. People who have received God’s salvation and are waiting for God’s love, most likely because they long for it. This first statement is a cry, begging really, for God to be merciful to people who don’t deserve any blessings from God. The disposition of the writer implies that despite identifying himself or herself as a child of God, in God’s presence, he or she desperately needs God to graciously bless him or her. How often, as Christians, have we longed for the mercy of God to bless us? I bet we can identify with the writer of this Psalm every day we are not at church, every time things don’t go right. This needs to be our prayer, our cry to God– bless us mercifully. When God blesses us, the result is Jesus’ face shining on us. Our lives become a reflection of Jesus’ face. The prize of God’s blessing is Jesus’ face on us. Our lives, everything that happens, everything that goes on is the embodiment of God with us– that is Jesus’ face, the result of Him looking upon us like a light in the sky. The personal embodiment of God with us is the blessing that we really seek, it is the only blessing that we need. It is tangible only to the one who believes. We need pray “God bless us” knowing that when God blesses us, Jesus is walking with us in every circumstance and every situation, every single moment. You you be blessed today.
