Have the small things in your life been given enough attention?

For whoever has despised the day of small things shall rejoice, and shall see the plumb line in the hand of Zerubbabel. “These seven are the eyes of the Lord , which range through the whole earth.” (Zechariah 4:10 ESV)

Throughout my life, I’ve typically ignored the small things in life. I turn my nose up at the little victories, the easy wins, the simple things. In fact, I usually focus so intently on the big things and the big wins, that minutiae pass by in my periphery. However, when I do stop and give my undivided attention to the small things, those things seem to snowball into game-changing and life-altering powers that cannot be stopped. In this passage, we find a prophecy about a small thing, regarding a guy named Zerubbabel. Zerubbabel had been tasked to rebuild the temple in Jerusalem. Unfortunately, it was a tiny temple in comparison to the original. Zerubbabel was doing the best he could with what he had: as small as the temple was, he was trying his best in the hopes that it would matter and count for something. Despite this, people everywhere were lamenting the fact that it was so small. The angel of God tells the prophet Zechariah that people are laughing and jeering at this small thing now, but it will become something greater. He says to the prophet, “these small things” are “the seven eyes of God.” Not that God has seven eyes, but that He sees and influences all corners of the Earth. It is from the small beginnings that God does his greatest work. It is in the small things that God moves and changes the world. If you are waiting for something big to happen in your life, and all these small things are passing you by, you may have already missed it. Look again at the small things, God uses the small things to do His will.
