Have you ever considered how sweet it is for us to live in this day and age? Here in the 21st century, we are free to live our lives without the fear of being condemned by laws we could not possibly uphold. We are free to be happy in pursuing our best life. This is only possible because Jesus became the curse and was punished for it.
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: Cursed is everyone who is hung on a pole. (Galatians 3:13 ESV)
It is a well known fact that Jesus was falsely accused of wrongdoing, and then he was unjustly crucified for being innocent. As he hung and died on a Roman cross a few feet from the city he loved, he embodied what no human being should ever be forced to embody– the sins of all people, past, present, and future. Believing this historical truth provides all believers with absolution from the curse that comes with being alive on this earth. The reason Jesus became the curse to suffer in hell for three days in the absence of God, the Father, was precisely so we wouldn’t have to spend even a single moment absent from the love of God that shapes and molds the world into being. God makes a promise to mankind: that the offspring of Abraham’s children of faith would be blessed in unimaginable ways. God wanted us to receive that gift and blessing. We are redeemed because Jesus became the curse so we can experience what it is like to be children of God. Reflect on how we are living into that blessing today.
