When your world shakes, are you shaken with it, or are you unshakable in spite of it? When the treasures of your heart disappoint you, does your heart fall by the wayside?

At that time his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.” This phrase, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of things that are shaken—that is, things that have been made—in order that the things that cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe… (Hebrews 12:26-28 ESV)

I saw a cherry picking video once on YouTube. Farmers shake the cherries off the trees  so that they can pick off the cherries. At the end of the picking, only the tree remains, the only thing that matters to produce more cherries. In the passage we just read, the author of the Hebrews is talking about how God will shake things up in the end days so that only the Kingdom of God remains at the forefront of our lives. It is a brilliant method too: you shake so that only the things that are not shaken remain. As God moves to do great things in our lives, He shakes our hearts and minds so that only what matters remains. Our God does not simply stir things to mix it up, He shakes things so the bad will fall away and only the best is left. He shook things up once before, when Jesus radically sacrificed himself for our inequities and transgressions. God will shake the world up in our lives once more so that we can receive the Kingdom of God without the stuff that doesn’t matter. Spend today reflecting on what else needs to be shaken off out of your life.
