And you, son of man, be not afraid of them, nor be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns are with you and you sit on scorpions. Be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, for they are a rebellious house. And you shall speak my words to them, whether they hear or refuse to hear, for they are a rebellious house. (Ezekiel 2:6-7)

The Deathstalker scorpion is one of the most deadly types of scorpions in the world. It’s venom is lethal, even at low doses because of the powerful neurotoxins that cause anaphylaxis. When the Bible talks about scorpions, this is the type of scorpion the Bible is referring to. People in the Middle East knew that being stung by a scorpion was a horrible way to die– it was painful and suffocating slow, that’s how you would die, suffocating on your own bodily functions. God tells Ezekiel that life is like sitting on scorpions and that means there is no avoiding the sting of a scorpion(s). However, knowing that there is no avoiding it, should make you unafraid to do what you were created and called to do– to preach the words of God regardless of what happens. We need to stop living a life driven by the fear a scorpion’s sting. It will happen because life is like sitting on deathstalkers, so why be afraid of something that will happen. In fact, don’t people’s words, looks, and opinions feel venomous? Doesn’t the lack of change and movement in your life you feel like you’re suffocating and life is killing you slowly, venomously? It is in times like these where we need not be afraid to do what we are called to do. You and I shall speak with the power of the Holy Spirit and continue to glorify God because Jesus died on a cross so you can have life to live your life the way God created you for. Don’t be afraid of the scorpions.
