But you, O Lord, are a shield around me; you are my glory, the one who holds my head high. Psalm 3:3
Listen to the words David uses while describing how his beat up situation is turning out while he cleaves to God: “a shield around me”; “my glory”; “holds my head.” These are defiant truths. These are bold claims. How can a person who is running for his life because his own son is looking to kill him, say these things? Just imagine the disappointment in his heart, the mental anguish, the emotions of betrayal. It’s as if he said these things knowing that the things going on around him did not matter. Nothing compared to the truth of who God was to David. Literally, the more you get beat up, the more God is able to lift your head up. The more you get beat up by life, people, circumstances, bills, school, family, church, etc the more chances God has to lift your head up. Here’s what the follower of Christ has to look forward to at the end of a beating: God provides safety as a shield. God bestows honor with His glory. God gives us joy by holding our heads high. If you’re feeling beat up, if you’re feeling betrayed, if you’re feeling like you need to be rescued from everybody and everything in life, then be assured that victory comes from God. The reason it comes is because you are His and there are no beatings that will keep Him from lifting your head on high.
