Some people just don’t understand how wrong they are. Better yet, some people just don’t realize that they are wrong. It pains us (or makes us laugh) to see it when it happens, too (depending on the situation).
Jesus said to them, Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God? (Mark 12:24)
Jesus was talking about the resurrection and the highly improbable situation he was asked about who’s wife will a dead woman because she was widowed seven times in life by one group of brothers. First thing is this: somebody is an idiot for allowing seven brothers marry the same woman. I know there is ancient Jewish tradition, that a childless widow must become the wife of the brother that is alive so that the dead brother can have offspring. Which is good and fine as an ancient custom; however I would think after the first two and maybe even the second or even the third, the parents of these boys would just adopt the widow as daughter instead of as a daughter in law. But do you see why Jesus is saying the people bringing the situation are missing the point? Yes, it’s because it’s a stupid (literally, no nice way to put it) situation that doesn’t make any sense. Moreover, they wanted to make the things that God should be concerned about a hypothetical non sequitur in light of a very real resurrection. You are being raised to glory in the resurrection, to give glory, and to be the glory of God. Does it really matter which of the seven husbands gets to be married with this woman scorned by the death of seven different husbands with nothing to show for it when she is given a new lease on life through the resurrection? Exactly, the last thing of importance in the next life is the life you left behind. The power of God is just that: new life uninhibited by your previous one. So you have a string of failures, disappointments, and unfulfilled hopes; God gives you new life and none of those things matter in the new life. Jesus affirms the resurrection as real. We will be brought to life in heaven with God in eternity. But faith in God now gives you a taste of a resurrected life later. When you place your faith in Jesus as your everything savior, you are given a new life uninhibited by your previous one. Don’t be wrong about that.
