I used to be told, “Nothing is impossible.” But in the face of impossibilities stacked on top of improbabilities, I just couldn’t understand why or how somebody could tell me that “nothing is impossible.”

Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said with tears, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:23-24 NKJV)

So my dad was the person who used to tell me that. Unfortunately, it took forever for me to understand why he said such a ludicrous thing. He was an immigrant to the United States who was forcibly humbled when he arrived. He worked as grocery store stock clerk, then a NYC cabbie, then a series of odd jobs and career failures at the brink of poverty each time. Each time, my dad came back, stronger, worked harder, defied more impossibilities. I’m sure this is the story of many successful individuals.

Jesus tells a man who is in total disbelief about the possibilities of God that all he needs to do is believe. Believe as if nothing else mattered. The man did believe, and he even asked God to help his unbelief. The result was the restoration of his child.

If the belief that all things are possible is only hindered by disbelief, and if all signs point toward believing despite the circumstances, couldn’t we all help ourselves by believing through our disbelief? After all, if God can raise the dead, then what can’t he do? What can’t we see and accomplish if we simply believed? If you want to see miracles in your lifetime, then you need to believe all things are possible with our God.
