You know that binky you used to carry? It assured you that everything would be okay as long as you clutched it tightly in your hands; well it provided you some false security, didn’t it? We do the same thing with church, don’t we? As long as we go every now and then, and get a spiritual tune-up, we have this sense of “our lives are going to be okay, despite all our efforts to sabotage them.” Today, we will investigate why false security is pregnant with destruction.
Do not trust in these deceptive words: This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord , the temple of the Lord . – Jeremiah 7:4 ESV
The context of this verse is fairly plain: people were screwing around with their lives and then coming to the Temple and acting like they were safe from the repercussions of their stupidity. God says to Jeremiah, “why do those idiots think they won’t pay for what they did?” That is the question we must ask ourselves when we deliberately sin and find solace in the fact that we will be forgiven. I won’t sit and define the term, “deliberately sin”, but I will tell you that it encompasses all things that you do that is unbecoming of God. That is to say that when you act unjustly, unlovingly, unforgivingly, and flat out oppressively. When we do these things, we mark ourselves as fair game to the repercussions of these actions. There is no security in the false security of cleansing your soul in a church service or throwing up a Hail Mary prayer. The only security you have from repercussions of your own doing is by doing what God tells you to do: love Him truly and love the people around you wholeheartedly. Then and only then will God grant you security.
