Have you ever watched the news and asked yourself, “Why would God allow something like that happen?” It seems like every other night now I seem to be asking that question. Honestly, I don’t know why God would. I do know that when we dig deep into who God is and His character, I find that God patiently and consistently allows for people to change and do what’s right.

The Prophet Nahum wrote around 660BC (give or take 50 years) in the city of Nineveh. You may recognize the name of the city, Nineveh, because you’ve seen it in the Book of Jonah. It is the very city where God commanded Jonah to preach repentance and the city repented and the city was saved from certain divine judgement. Well, 100 years later, Nahum wrote the account of Nineveh as the people fell into a long period of harboring injustice and evil without repentance or remorse.

God is good, a hiding place in tough times. He recognizes and welcomes anyone looking for help, no matter how desperate the trouble. But cozy islands of escape He wipes right off the map. No one gets away from God.  Why waste time conniving against God? He’s putting an end to all such scheming. For troublemakers, no second chances. Like a pile of dry brush, soaked in oil, they’ll go up in flames. (Nahum 1:7-10)

Nahum’s writing describes to us the very nature of God when, despite the opportunities and chances given to them to turn around and change to do what’s right, His judgment falls upon the wickedness of humanity. The reason God is good is because He recognizes and welcomes people looking for help. What I want to make clear here is that the desperation and “trouble” Nahum is referring to is not a “trouble” created by other people and circumstances out of their control, rather it is a trouble that is created by themselves because of what they have done.

There is nothing you could have possibly done that would keep you from God’s love if you come to your senses and ask God for help. The time for you to come to God is right now. That window of opportunity to ask God for help in your troubles and your desperation will close. The execution of God’s judgment is coming.

It is important that you and I come to God in repentance and seeking His help right now. Now is the time you and I need to come to God. He will recognize us and He will welcome us. Don’t let the door close on you. Don’t end up like Nineveh in 612BC … out of time.
