Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and said, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my house, that you have brought me thus far? – 2 Samuel 7:18 The title of today’s quiet time is twofold: how far have we come in life and how much further can we go? it is in these two distinct terms by which we have to look at our lives. First, we have to look back on our lives and reflect on how far we came. Secondly, we have to look at where we are and envision where our destination may be on our journey of life. King David comes to an awareness of this reality and suddenly feels the gravity by which he is honored by God is not his own doing, but a gift extended to him by God out of love and grace. This reality which unites our past with our future right now always should leave us humbled and honored; but it doesn’t does it? In looking back at our past, we must be absolutely certain of one thing: we didn’t get here on our own and our marred past did not keep God from getting further along in life than we realized. I know some of you out there reading this are internalizing the idea that you got to this point in life despite the activities of God, but is this really the case? Wasn’t it mostly lucky breaks and opportune circumstances that got your hard work noticed in the first place? So to that end, we have to realize our certain fate if not for breaks and opportunities divined by the providence of God– we’d be a forgettable afterthought, lost amongst millions and billions of other people in this world who are neglected and forgotten. We are not those people and it would behoove us to think that we are where we are in life in spite of God. We need to start keeping count of the blessings and constantly remember that being here in the now, could be somebody else and not us; that is something to be constantly humbled by and grateful of. Let’s not forget your present circumstance is the perfect platform for you to go further than you imagined in your life. Likewise, in realizing that we are actually nothing, but God still brought us this far in life, we have to understand that we stand before our future with a long ways to go to fulfill who God wants us to be in the future. Now is not the time to sell yourself short because you are not confident in who you are to God. yet, this is the tendency and some of us will continue to play down our worthiness based on our own standard and devoid of God’s power and influence in our lives. We might not like the fact that we are so unworthy because of our mistakes and shortcomings, but God also wants to do more for us than we will ever know, we just need to be willing to embrace it. The question of “how far” begs from within our hearts and it looms along the edges of our sanity because we can’t fathom this type of love and sacrifice ever being bestowed upon us. It has been bestowed upon us and it is for us to receive because who we are to God, is worthy to bring thus far and to carry even further. Therefore, we stand here in the present, and since God has brought us this far, it is clear that He wants to take us further than we can imagine. So the question of “how far” also becomes “in which direction do we go.” The prophet Nathan advises King David, “God brought you this far based on where your heart wanted to go; He’ll take you further than you imagined and all you have to do is go where your heart tells you to go.” So I advise you, having a righteous heart and godly intentions, go in the direction your heart desires and see how far God will take you because I can only imagine and I sense God’s reality to be greater than even my wildest imaginations. How far do you want to go?
