The Lord said to Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Shall I indeed bear a child, now that I am old?’ Is anything too hard for the Lord? At the appointed time I will return to you, about this time next year, and Sarah shall have a son.”

Genesis 18:13‭-‬14 ESV

Sometimes we take the promises of God and laugh at them in disbelief. Is that why we’re missing out on the power of God working in our lives?

Sarah was 90 years old when this occurred. Her husband was one hundred. Is this even medically possible? Sarah reacted the way you would expect a normal person to react: laughing as if it were a joke. Sarah didn’t believe it would be possible.

After all, she spent all of her childbearing years barren. How could she have a child when she is so frail and old? The lesson that we need to learn from this situation is that God is not joking around when he promises you something.

Perhaps you are sitting there laughing at the promise God made to you in your vision (on the otherhand, if you don’t know what to do with that vision, then read this article I wrote about immediately moving on your vision).

You’re thinking:

  • You’re too old to change careers.
  • You’ve been rejected by too many companies.
  • You don’t have the skills.
  • You don’t have the credentials.
  • It’s too late to get married.
  • You fought way too many times to have a good relationship.
  • You ate too much for you to lose weight.
  • There have been too many mistakes you’ve made to be redeemed.

The list can keep going on, if you allow the doubt and disbelief captivate your thoughts.

The promise you want to hold on to today in the middle of your disbelief is this: “Is anything too hard for the Lord?”

The answer to that rhetorical question is: “no, there is nothing too hard for God.” He saved us by becoming man, then living sinlessly, then dying on the cross for our sins, then suffering in hell for us. It was only after those impossible things had happened that he was resurrected from the dead. If that is the God we believe in and place our trust in, then there is definitely nothing too hard for him. There is nothing that he cannot do.

Prayer: God, help us remember that your life, death, and resurrection was not a joke. That we believe in that impossibility and as a result, we can believe in the promises you make for our lives. Help us live into that truth today when disbelief floods our thoughts.
