Have you ever wondered why meditation and prayer are so essential to your faith? Better yet, have you thought about why people who pray more and meditate more on the things of God have deeper relationships with Him? Or why, when you stop meditating over God and praying, you find yourself being controlled and manipulated by things you don’t want to do? How can I know all the sins lurking in my heart? Cleanse me from these hidden faults (Psalm 19:12). David writes this Psalm knowing that God created everything to point people to Him. David knows that nature, the Bible, and his circumstances point to God, yet despite all of that, he sees himself drifting from God when he’s not carefully meditating on the things of God and the person of God. He says that there are things that “lurk” within his heart that he doesn’t even know about, nor is aware of which may come to ensnare him. He asks God to “cleanse me.” It’s so easy to stray from God and His decrees and His dreams for you and me. In fact, all you have to do is stop thinking about those things and just let things happen. You’ll find yourself swiftly being flooded by things you never knew you harbored within yourself. Because of this, we need to make it a habit and a practice to meditate on God and ask Him consciously and deliberately to cleanse us from the things that haven’t been discovered yet. Even if we do allow these hidden faults overcome us from time to time, at least our meditation and our confession will intentionally focus on God and He will cleanse us from within. Let the meditation of our hearts be directed to God and of His glory.
