Have you ever woken up in the morning with a terribly parched throat? It’s so dry that it hurts? It feels like the onset of a really bad cold, or as my wife diagnoses it, “URI” (Upper Respiratory Infection). I know I have my fair share of days where the dryness in my throat felt like the sands of the Sahara ripping apart the inside of my throat and mouth and no amount of water could quench the thirst. Then finally, you gulp down that wonderfully artificially colored sparkling drink known affectionately as “Coke” and your throat is better– but also that raging headache you’ve unwittingly been suffering is improving. That is the feeling you get when your soul thirsts for God so long. You feel sick in your pits, or perhaps empty without quite knowing why. When we are spiritually thirsty, we lose ourselves and our bearings. We become nostalgic of yesterday, wondering when God will fulfill us again by bringing back a direction and some joy in life. But when you go around other believers or meet God in a church service or revival, life as you know it feels like you haven’t been thirsty ever. So long has it been since we were satisfied to the brim with the Holy Spirit. It is exactly what the doctor ordered for your moment of emptiness– of spiritual thirst.

Let me hear in the morning of your steadfast love,     for in you I trust. Make me know the way I should go,     for to you I lift up my soul. – Psalm 143:8 –

If you don’t want to wake up with the dreaded sense of thirst that hurts from the pits of your soul, then you need to ask God to speak to you this morning. You need to ask God to speak to you every morning. Only God can fill your soul and soothe the pains within you. Only God can provide answers to questions you did not even know to ask. Only God can provide your being. If your soul thirsts, ask God to be heard by you.
