Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. – Mark 13:31 When Jesus says that His words will not pass away, He is making a bold claim. That claim being whatever He says will ALWAYS stand as true and will not be disproven or flipped into an alternate theory. Understand that often times we become liars because what we say become proven to be untrue. Just look at any scientific “truth” discovered in the last 50 years and the number of times those “truths” have been flipped back and forth. If that is not reason enough to grasp how big of a statement Jesus was making, then just think about things that you said to be your will (about the things you will do and how you will do them) and then have your will be flipped upside down by things outside of your control only to have your will overturned, making you a liar to your kids, who no longer can go to the park because you have to work, or your girlfriends/boyfriends because you have family things to deal with, etc. I can keep going on with the list, but these are the ones that probably leave the largest scars in your memory. Heaven and earth pass away just like our words. Jesus says that His words do not and will not. The reason Jesus can make such a claim is because all things are in His control. If that is not good enough for you, then the reason Jesus can make this claim, if you don’t believe in a God who is omnipotent and engaged with His creation, is because Jesus came back from death. If you come back to life from death, then you can make this claim and people will have to believe, if they don’t believe in God. But we believe in a loving God who is engaged with all of His creation and His children. So when Jesus says believe in my words to be an unshakeable truth, we need to believe in Jesus to give us words of unshakeable truth to guide our lives and make us move. The world can and will crumble around you, but if you cling to the truth in the words of Jesus, you will never, ever find yourself caught grasping at emptiness.
