To walk deeply with Jesus is to discover who we truly are in Him. Before Christ, our identity was defined by our separation from God. We were “dead in your trespasses,” and before the holy judge of the universe stood a “record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands.” Imagine a courtroom with an impossibly long list of charges against you, a debt you could never hope to pay.
But then Christ walked into that courtroom. He took that list of charges—every single one—walked over to the cross, and nailed it there. At that moment, He stamped the record of our debt in His own blood: PAID IN FULL. The debt is not just forgiven; it is canceled, erased, and permanently set aside. The case is closed. This act was not a defeat but a declaration of total victory.
Paul uses the imagery of a Roman Triumphal Procession, where a victorious general would parade his conquered enemies through the city in open shame. At the cross, Christ “disarmed the rulers and authorities,” taking away their primary weapons: fear, guilt, shame, and condemnation.
Because of this, our identity is now secure. We are forgiven, alive, and victorious. This means we don’t fight for victory over sin and shame; we are called to walk in the victory that Christ has already won for us.
Application Questions:
- The enemy’s primary weapons are fear, guilt, and shame. Which of these do you find yourself wrestling with most often?
- How does meditating on the truth that your debt is “canceled” and “nailed to the cross” change how you view your past mistakes and current weaknesses?
- In what specific situation this week can you remind yourself that you are “walking in victory,” not fighting for it?
