Remember that last fight you were in? It was probably something really stupid you fought about. I mean, most verbal fights are pretty dumb in nature in hindsight. If only one person just sucked it up and kept their mouth shut, the fight would be a non fight and would have blown over like nothing; but as humans, we just can’t be that person that shuts up and says nothing. I mean the extent at which verbal fights get out of hand is astronomically mind blowing. There are so many stupid things that we, dumb, egotistical Christians fight about that is evident in our relationships. I’ve heard people fight about how the color of a pastor’s tie causes dissensions amongst the deacon board so much so that the pastor stopped wearing ties; but that too caused dissensions. Moreover, I’ve witnessed fights about how music at church was too “hip” or how there was too much beef and not enough pork at the last church BBQ. I can go on and on with the list of stupid arguments that people have, but I won’t. I sit here and judge those people because I’m one of those people. I’ve gotten into petty arguments about some petty things. Remind them of these things, and charge them before God not to quarrel about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers. (2 Timothy 2:14) The Apostle Paul writes to Timothy saying that people should act like they’re standing before God and actually responsible instead of being stupid, selfish people. Really, that’s what you should understand that passage as. The reason I say that is because we sometimes stand fighting and not speaking to people because we just can’t stop being selfishly ignorant of the responsibility we really carry. We have no right to quarrel because we are charged with bigger and more important things. We need to do good and not ruin people who are around and listening. We need to sacrifice our egos and stop petty arguments. I want you to think about the last argument that you had– was it really worth it? 1 in 20 will say, “yes, it was.” 19 of you will say, I could have avoided the aggravation by saying nothing. All of you would say that regardless of worth, it was an embarrassment that I could have spared myself from. We are all charged by God not to quarrel about frivolities. Do some good and stop the petty arguments.
