I am so busy sometimes that I forget to slow down and do what Jesus does intentionally and often: say a blessing that is reflective and honest.
Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. (Matthew 14:19 ESV)
There was nothing to eat where they were. No food trucks, no food court, no restaurants. There was a village nearby but honestly it didn’t matter because the disciples had no money anyways. There was five loaves and two fish.
So Jesus, although he could have made it rain manna from heaven didn’t. Instead he taught us a lesson in stopping in our tracks and saying a blessing. Jesus looked up to heaven and thanked God that there was even some bread and fish to share with the hungry people.
When we pause and say a blessing, we begin to realize that despite what we may feel like, God is blessing us. We need to appreciate that and be placed in a mindset of receiving blessing from what seems to be nothing, because I will tell you that it is more than nothing; it is a miracle.
