Did you know that we really are the cause of our own demise? Everything we do, will ultimately lead to our own death. We ruin ourselves by desiring our own welfare, but trading it in for shortcuts assuming they will get us where are current lives are not. These are “transgressions” we carry the rest of our lives and loathe God for.
Cast away from you all the transgressions that you have committed, and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! Why will you die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord God; so turn, and live. (Ezekiel 18:31-32)
In this scene, God is not asking us to do the impossible by living perfectly, He is urging us to do what we can in our own power and call out to Him and pray for what is outside of our power. That’s what God is saying when He says, “make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit!” God doesn’t want us to die in our shortcomings, mistakes, sins, and iniquities. God wants us to live repentant, facing His glory, accepting His grace. The shame of our sins and condemnation should lead us into His direction– asking Him for help in changing our minds and our ways. When we do repent with a new heart and a new spirit, we receive God’s mercy and new life. This is the miracle of mercy: when we are willing to give up our life that leads to death, we will be granted a life that is alive. Make the resolution to turn and live before God. Don’t hide your sin and shame. Instead, go before God and recover your life by facing His grace.
