Jesus said to them, “If you were blind, you would have no guilt; but now that you say, ‘We see,’ your guilt remains.” (John 9:41)
In John 9, the story of Jesus healing a man blind from birth is told by John. The conclusion of this story is verse 41 where Jesus tells the Pharisees who are witnessing the healing of this blind man but yet doubting that the blind man can now see that they are spiritually blind. It is ironic that Jesus heals a blind man who couldn’t ever see in his life leads to the Pharisees who saw the works of God their entire lives could no longer see it.
The harshness of the language Jesus uses toward these Pharisees is because the blind man had to explain to the Pharisees three times that he could really see (like that could be faked) and the three times the Pharisees heard the story and witnessed themselves the miracle that they refused to believe in it. If the Pharisees didn’t know any better then there would have been no harm in disbelieving because they never would have or could have imagined it. But they were God folks. Their culture was shaped around it.
This type of disbelief is not uncommon amongst those of us who grew up Christian in the millennial age. We grew up knowing who Jesus is because our parents taught us and showed us, and because we’ve seen it in church; however, we question God’s work when He’s doing it right before our eyes! Why have we have become spiritually blind? What reasons do we have for blinding ourselves from God in this day and age? I want to believe. I want to see. I’m sure you want to do the same.
Today, lets ask God to take away the blinders. Just like Jesus made mud and anointed blind man’s eyes so he can see because he asked Jesus; I believe Jesus will anoint our hearts and spirits to him if we would just ask. Lets not miss out on God because we are spiritually blind.
