Whether it is building a career or a coffee table, I often find that having an example to follow is the best.
If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. (John 13:14-15 ESV)
Can you imagine having the creator of the universe hand wash your feet after a long day of walking in flip-flops or sandals? I’m not talking about walking along a pristine beach, but along dirt and debris where the is garbage and waste littered where you step.
The analogy Jesus’ actions provide us should b remind us of the type of person we need to imitate. He is the example we follow as we touch the lives of people who have been walked barefoot or in flip-flops along the unpaved, dirt roads of life.
But we don’t follow this example, do we. We would prefer to wash the feet of somebody who hasn’t had the dirt build up between their toenails. It is undeniable that Jesus’ example for us is hard and difficult to follow, but at least we can look at the example and press forward. That too is a blessing. Let us follow the example and if we fail, let us try to follow the example until we get it right.
