What would you do if you knew God was with you?
And Nathan said to the king, Go, do all that is in your heart, for the Lord is with you. (2 Samuel 7:3 ESV)
I think if somebody told us what Nathan, the prophet told King David, many of us would immediately say something in the veins of something that would make me rich and famous. The better portion of us, the ones who are altruistic in nature, would even incline to say something like, “solve world hunger” or create “world peace.” But when you think about it, the things that we would do knowing that God is with us are small and pale in comparison to greatness of God’s capabilities when He is with us. After all, God is the creator of the universe and redeemer of our lives, is there anything that would be too impossible for Him? Why would we stop at such temporal things, things that can be achieved so easily? Shouldn’t we aim bigger, greater, to push our faith to the limits of our belief in who God is to us? For David, world conquest was a small thing. In fact, riches and fame, he already had it. The passage right before this, the Bible reiterates that David had just accomplished world peace, at least to the degree of his world. In his heart was something greater– to build a place fit for the God who created the universe into being. Can you imagine building something worthy and great enough to fit God almighty? David imagined it in his mind and it was in his heart. To give God, who does not need anything or want anything, a place to dwell because you love Him so much, you want Him to have a place as grand as you can build for Him, fit for the God of the Heavens. This is a dream. This is what you and I need to have on our hearts when the Lord is with you and me. Ask God for a vision and mission that extends us to length, width, and depth of His love and mercy for us and then go do it.
