Sometimes we need to think back to a time in order to move forward in life.

I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds. (Psalms 77:11-12 ESV)

The person writing this Psalm, Asaph, is sitting in the midst of his troubles wondering where and when God might show up to help him. He honestly doesn’t know why he is in so much trouble and pain and cannot understand why God is absent. In fact, Asaph says that it is God’s fault for keeping him in this state of worry, if only God were to reach out to him, then he might be able to get some peace. Then Asaph changes his tune. He gets a bright idea. He will think back about the times and moments God showed up. Asaph recounts the times God saved the day after all the turmoil. He remembers that the power of God cannot be stopped. He remembers God in his life and in the life of his people so that when he thinks about these troubles he is facing now, he can have perspective. How often do we forget about the victories in our past when trouble strikes our present? When was the last time you found yourself in trouble and forgot that God saved you from your last trouble? We need to think back to our days in God so that we can move forward with God. The Psalmist teaches us that if we meditate on what God does and who He is, then whatever we’re facing now will not matter because it would be eclipsed by the glory of God. Thank back to go forward.
