Would you recognize God’s voice if He spoke to you today? I wonder how many of us would.
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. (John 10:27)
Jesus taught the people that He was the good shepherd that would lay his life down for his sheep. Jesus was referring to the sacrifice he would make on Calvary when he died on the cross, bearing our sins past, present, and future. Then he said when his “sheep hears his voice” they will follow him. They will follow him because they recognize the voice of God calling them because he knows who they are and where they are going. They will change directions to go where the person who is calling them is leading them. It is a beautiful analogy of Christian discipleship.
We are called by Jesus because He knows us. He knows where we are because He is calling us in our direction and we hear His voice. If we were followers of Jesus, we would follow that voice to wherever it was leading. But and this is the biggest problem with 21st century believers– we don’t actually follow. We go as far as hearing God’s voice. We go as far as knowing that God knows where I am. We don’t actually follow.
Today that must change. If we know God’s voice, we need to follow God’s voice. If we are unsure of what God sounds like, we must ask God, “is that you?” You will undoubtedly get a response from God that is akin to, “watch and see.” I dare you to follow through and go after God. I know I will.
