Tunnel vision is real! We get it because grind of our daily lives is hard. We lose sight of the bigger picture amidst the distractions and false starts in our lives. We easily be consumed by our trials, circumstances, and situations and forget to see what God is doing around us. It’s tempting to give up, but that’s when we need to remember how Jesus calls his disciples.
Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.” (John 1:50-51 ESV)
Nathanael was the disciple Jesus was talking to in this passage. He was sitting under a fig tree when his brother, Philip told him about Jesus. Now the circumstances of why Nathanael was sitting under the fig tree are unknown– was he tired, getting some respite from the heat of the day, was he hiding, or maybe just eating figs? No idea. The point is that Nathanael was surprised Jesus knew that he was sitting under a fig tree. Nathanael was surprised because he wasn’t expecting anything from Jesus. The reason he wasn’t expecting anything from Jesus was because he was so locked in on assuming something about Jesus from the town of Nazareth, where nothing good ever comes out of it. He had tunnel vision.
Even though we believe in Jesus’ power, have that same tunnel vision Nathanael had. We don’t expect anything because we’re so focused on what we know and expect to see in our every day. Jesus teaches us that we can only witness God do the unexpected, when we stop expecting to see God do what we expect. You will see greater things than what you’ve seen, but only if you get out of your tunnel vision.
