Have you ever spewed poop? I don’t mean from your butt but from your mouth and your actions? Sure you have, I have too. We’re all human. But the question isn’t whether it smelled bad, but rather, why did it come out that way in the first place.
And he (Jesus) said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. (Mark 7:20 ESV, emphasis my own)
Jesus alludes to our hearts as the reason for the expulsion of disgusting excrements in our private and public lives. They manifest themselves through evil thoughts and words, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness, deceit, envy, slander, pride, and foolishness. Define any of these things as you want and in any degree of severity as you wish, but here’s the bottom-line: it causes the world and people around to be exposed to dirtiness through us by our own doing.
If our hearts cause us to spew such dirtiness into our lives and the lives of the people around us, then how do we stop defiling ourselves and the people in our lives?
You and I need to examine why we say and do things that are so disgusting. Is it because we haven’t allowed the Holy Spirit to wash us clean in some areas of our heart? Or is it because we don’t recognize how disgusting it is sometimes to be around our hardened hearts rebelling against God? I can question and reflect for all eternity but always arrive at this conclusion: left to our own, our hearts make us as clean as an old port-a potty; therefore we need the Holy Spirit to change our hearts and make God’s name and glory the only thing that comes out of us.
