Have you ever felt like you’re in a position that is above your ability? Maybe you’re in a role right now where you feel like a fish out of water and you’re just floundering by. If that’s how you feel, I have news for you: you have everything you need to do the job well and you are well positioned to do exactly what you’re called to do in your role.

It doesn’t matter what that role is, analyst, team leader, manager, vice president, CEO, mom, dad, grandpa, etc. You are uniquely positioned and called by God where you are and our Father in heaven is enabling us to do what we have to do and to do it well.

… and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft.

Exodus 31:3-5 ESV

In this passage, God is talking to Moses about a man named Bezalel who was going to build the tabernacle of God according to the requirements God gave to Moses. That is a tall order. Moses knew he couldn’t build it. God had already chosen the person who was going to build this tabernacle. The tabernacle was where the spirit of God dwelled as the people of Israel sojourned to the promised land.

Below, find two things we can learn from this passage and how it applies to us when we feel like we’re not the right person for the job at hand.

#1 – God Provided the Skills and Know-How

The phrase, “ability and intelligence” can be roughly translated to, “skills and know-how.” Every situation you faced and every circumstance you encountered shaped your thoughts and helped you formulate information that would move you along.

Most people have it in their minds that they do not have the skills or the know-how to take on a role. I’m going to tell you otherwise. God filled you with the skills and education, no matter how unorthodox, those skills and that education came. If you have the ability to discern and a mind to formulate thoughts and opinions and synthesize situations, then you have know-how. In fact, that’s what got you through life.

Do not underestimate your learning and your capacity to absorb. Just sit and reflect on it to see how God has filled you with ability.

#2 – You are Filled with the Spirit of God

I love what God tells Moses about the craftsman, Bezalel: “I have filled him with the Spirit of God. Bezalel had developed the skills and the know-how, but to work and create according to the specifications and imagination of God, that takes the Spirit of God dwelling within a person. That’s exactly what we see here. God filled Bezalel with his Spirit.

This is a promise for you and me. Even if we don’t have the skills or the know-how, we are filled with the Spirit of God. We are in your role, not by chance, but by the the power, grace, and mercy of God working in our lives.

Conclusion

God called you, and subsequently gave you the enabling tools to serve well where you are currently, even if you don’t think you have it within you to do a job well. Continue to trust God has filled you with His Spirit. After all, the Spirit of God is what Jesus promised his followers when he ascended to heaven.

If you’re feeling like you’re not ready for the role you’re in or the one you’re about to take on, then remember God has already enabled you by giving you the skills and know-how and filled you with His Spirit. That means you’re coming with power and authority. You have everything you need when you trust in God to live fully into the calling placed on your heart.
