Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand and touched him and said to him, “I will; be clean.”

Mark 1:41 ESV

I think the world would be radically different if we would do something whenever we’re moved with pity. If we take a play from our savior, then, it’s very clear that we need to something anytime we are moved with pity. So the big question then becomes, “what do we do?”

Below, I listed 5 gospel centered things you can do when you are moved with pity:

  1. Spend time listening to the people you are moved for pity with. You will learn something.
  2. Pray to God and ask for help and guidance. Sometimes the problem is too big for us, but it’s definitely not too big for God. We need to pray and ask Him to do his will.
  3. Be willing to act on what you heard while listening. This is where a lot of us fail. Especially myself. I listen, and I pray, but I don’t always act. Most people find this the hardest to do because we’re often left with the bewildering thought of not being able to do satisfactorily.
  4. Keep acting. Don’t give up on acting after 1 try. I know when we’re moved to pity and we’ll do a little something, but we won’t finish the job. We have to keep going otherwise we’ve just put a bandaid on an issue that deserves surgery.
  5. Follow up with the person you served. This is how you will know if your efforts were effective. Check-in with the people you had pity for. They will value it a lot.

When you do this five things every time you encounter a situation where you are filled with pity, then you will undoubtedly see your world change. Jesus stopped and healed somebody every single time he was filled with pity and it changed the lives of people millennia after he walked this earth.

Prayer: Father in heaven, help us have pity. More than that, help us do something with our pity and move into action by being your hands and feet. Lord, we want to see the world changed for good and those things that filled us with pity to be eradicated. Help us commit to addressing the cause of our pity. We pray this in Jesus name. Amen.
