You know there is a problem when you can literally see it coming against you.

But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” (Matthew 14:30 ESV)

It’s amazing to me, when people can do such amazing things like walking on water, and yet look at something natural and become afraid. It is the sadness of the human condition though. One minute, we are flying high; the next, things (like the wind, which are part of our day-to-day) become the very things that cause us to sink.

I think it is perfect that it is Peter who exemplifies our most natural human state of mind: doubt. It is the guy whom the church was to be built on; the Rock who perceives, or sees, what wasn’t revealed naturally but by the power of God that Jesus was the Messiah, who falters because there is wind around him while he was walking on water. Mind you, there was a big storm before this occasion and yet Peter is afraid because the wind blows.

It’s natural for the wind to blow around us. It’s especially normal when there is wind blowing while we are walking in faith with Jesus and doing something beyond our own abilities. As such, I would like to remind us that when the wind blows our God does not get blown away with it, nor will we get thrown away by our Savior. The next time the wind blows, keep on walking. Jesus wants us to come to him and believe we will walk on water all the way to him.
