Sometimes all our efforts and ask our abilities is not enough. It may even feel like we hit a ceiling where our innate abilities and our experience fall short in meeting the need. We aren’t the first people to feel powerless this way, nor will we be the last. In Matthew 17 there is a story where Jesus heals a demon possessed boy that couldn’t be healed by anybody.

And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was healed instantly. Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” (Matthew 17:18‭-‬19 ESV)

If you read ahead to verses 20 and 21, you will learn that it was because the disciples did not exercise faith in Jesus to do what they could not. Jesus says to them that if they had “faith like a mustard seed” the impossible would be nothing and incredible things would happen. But if you read what Jesus is saying here, you figure out that he is saying that our best abilities are limited, by nature. There are some things that we simply cannot do because they are beyond our abilities to do them.

“We could not” because when we couldn’t, a space was made for us to believe and witness how God can. When you find yourself in a could not situation remember that you have faith so God could. It doesn’t even take a lot of faith so God could. Just enough faith to get stuck in between the gaps in your teeth. I pray we can’t, so God can in our lives.
