Say to all the people of the land and the priests, When you fasted and mourned in the fifth month and in the seventh, for these seventy years, was it for me that you fasted? And when you eat and when you drink, do you not eat for yourselves and drink for yourselves? (Zechariah 7:5-6)
It occurred to me that most people, myself included, will use religious acts of piety for our own purposes rather than for the glory and honor of God. You probably already knew that though. In fact that may be a reason you are reading this as opposed to joining a church or going to Bible Study. That’s right– people who go to church or do religious things are probably, at best, hypocrites! The Bible says so. But, let’s be clear now. Every act of piety to any god, whether it be the God of Heaven whose name is Yahweh, or your alter super ego called id, is actually mostly driven by selfish intent if we are not careful to stop and think about why we are doing what we are doing. Moreover, we are incredibly dull and hypocritical when we are not intentionally taking our piety and devoting that to being lowly. Today you must make it your every reason to participate in religion for the honor of God. We can no longer sit indifferent to acts of religion without intentional devotion to the God whose name and work define the religion. What that means is that, stop and think about what you are doing when you are doing religion. So in your pause, your prayers, fasts, and devotions mean something. That should be the reason we religion.
